|}
== Your task ==
As you listen, do not try to write down everything the speaker says. Listen for ideas that can help you evaluate, improve, and design better instructional materials.
== PART 1 — UNDERSTANDING THE CORE IDEAS ==
=== 1. What does the speaker mean by multimodal literacy? Explain the concept in your own words. ===
It is the ability to understand, analyze, and communicate meaning using multiple modes—such as written text, visual images, audio, gestures, layout, and space—rather than relying solely on traditional printed language.
=== 2. Why should instructional materials today go beyond written text? Write at least two reasons discussed by the speaker. ===
 Real-world texts that students encounter daily (like social media, videos, and digital platforms) are naturally multimodal, so learning materials need to reflect this reality.
 Subject matter knowledge itself (like math, science, and history) is inherently multimodal, using graphs, diagrams, and symbols alongside text to convey ideas effectively.
=== 3. What modes of meaning-making does the speaker mention? List as many as you can hear. ===
Written text, visual images/diagrams, spoken audio/intonation, gestures/body language, facial expressions, spatial orientation/layout, color, and typography/font.
== PART 2 — FROM DIGITAL TO MULTIMODAL ==
=== 4. What is the difference between digital material and meaningful multimodal material? ===
Digital material simply uses technology or screens to deliver content, whereas meaningful multimodal material purposefully combines different modes (like visuals, audio, and text) to help learners construct and express meaning deeply.
{| class="wikitable"
! Digital Material !! Multimodal Learning Material
|-
|
 Focuses mainly on the medium/technology (e.g., digitized PDFs, screens).
 Often relies on a single dominant mode (monomodal) transferred to a digital screen.
 Might use technology just as a vehicle without changing how meaning is constructed.
||
 Focuses on the integration of multiple semiotic resources to make meaning.
 Uses complementary modes (visual, audio, textual, spatial) to expand meaning potential.
 Actively engages learners in viewing, analyzing, and representing ideas across modes.
|}
=== 5. What digital tool is mentioned? What is it used for? ===
Tools like Kahoot, TikTok/Instagram, YouTube, and digital presentation software (e.g., PowerPoint/PowerPoint slides) were mentioned. They are used to engage students, capture attention, present multimodal content, and allow students to create their own multimodal projects (like videos or digital stories).
== PART 3 — DESIGNING INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ==
=== 6. What are three things to consider when designing multimodal materials? ===
 Alignment with learning objectives and curriculum standards (ensuring multimodality serves a clear educational purpose).
 The target learners' background, interests, and linguistic/cultural needs (selecting authentic and meaningful texts).
 The complementary relationship between different modes so they support and expand meaning without overwhelming the learner.
=== 7. According to the speaker, what makes multimodal materials effective? ===
They are effective when they provide a clear pedagogical meta-language, scaffold learning appropriately, connect classroom tasks to students' real-world experiences, and offer opportunities for both viewing (critical analysis) and representing (creative production).
=== 8. How do students learn through multimodal materials? ===
Students learn by making sense of different semiotic resources, connecting visual and auditory inputs to textual concepts, and expanding their 'meaning potential' as they actively analyze and produce multimodal content.
== PART 4 — EVALUATING MATERIALS ==
=== 9. What should we look for when evaluating digital or multimodal materials? Write three things mentioned by the speaker. ===
 Whether the modes work together effectively to enhance understanding rather than just act as decorative elements.
 Whether the material supports critical engagement and analysis (helping students evaluate bias or fake news).
 How well the material aligns with assessment goals and supports learners with diverse linguistic abilities.
=== 10. What challenges of using digital or multimodal materials does the speaker mention? ===
 Teacher anxiety or lack of confidence regarding how to teach and assess multimodal literacy.
 Student concern over traditional assessments/exams that may not reward multimodal skills.
 The risk of distraction or superficial engagement if materials lack structured instructional design.
=== 11. What solutions or suggestions does the speaker give? ===
 Co-designing lesson packages collaboratively between researchers and teachers.
 Introducing a simple pedagogical meta-language so teachers and students can discuss how meaning is made.
 Providing clear instructional scaffolding and structured rubrics that balance viewing and representing activities.
== PART 5 — CONNECTING THE LECTURE TO IMED ==
=== 12. Which aspect of instructional material development does this lecture make you think about most? ===
 [ ] Content
It highlighted that visual elements, layout, and interactive modes aren't just decorative additions—they directly shape how learners process information and construct meaning.
=== 13. Imagine you are developing a digital English learning module. Based on the lecture, what is ONE change you would make to improve the module? ===
 '''Instead of:''' Relying mostly on long reading texts followed by standard comprehension questions.
 '''I would:''' Integrate short authentic videos and infographics, and ask students to create a mini digital presentation or poster to demonstrate their understanding.
 '''Because:''' Combining viewing and representing helps expand students' meaning potential and makes language learning much more engaging and authentic.
== REFLECTION ==
=== 14. Complete the following: ===
 '''Before this lecture, I thought good digital instructional material was…'''
: simply converting traditional print materials into digital formats like PDFs or slides with nice pictures.
 '''Now, I think good multimodal instructional material should…'''
: purposefully orchestrate text, visuals, audio, and interactive elements to help students critically analyze and express ideas effectively.
=== 15. One idea from the lecture that I will take into my IMED project is: ===
Using a structured multimodal framework (connecting viewing and representing) and teaching students a simple meta-language to analyze and create digital content.

INTRODUCTION
Speaking anxiety phenomena in students’ English foreign language is one of the most complex and essential issues. In formal school students often feel afraid of being wrong or judged, so their communication skills do not develop optimally. Besides, speaking contains the structure of the rhetoric that could make someone feel afraid of speaking because speaking has many elements that must be mastered by someone (Noermanzah, et al; 2020). Moreover, speaking is an activity to communicate by individuals or with others. But, (Hilarious, et al; 2024) states that, since speaking is a method, using oral speech in social interaction provides the outcome of overthinking. Some English Foreign Language Students’ feel a challenging subject that can influence the learning process, especially speaking anxiety. Some of the minor factors contributing to anxiety included situations such as classroom presentations, fear of being left behind, inability to understand the lesson, etc. (Aguila, 2016).
To overcome these difficulties, many students seek alternative learning environments that offer more practical and communicative approaches, (Budiarti. 2025). Through Environmental strategies at English Course, it helps EFL students overcome speaking anxiety.
